It is with great sadness that I must inform you that the Plymouth Admirals are unable to fulfil their remaining fixtures of the 2008 season. This will affect the following upcoming games:
vs Cornish Sharks - 10th August 2008
@ South Wales Warriors – 17th August 2008
The reason for the forfeitures is an unprecedented number of player injuries and unavailability this season. History shows that we are not a team afraid to play games with small squads, home or away, and even if the outcome is likely to be a heavy defeat. We’ve done that before and would do it again.
But this season the line has been crossed between difficult and dangerous which is the reason this most difficult of decisions has been taken by the coaching staff and management committee.
We have pulled out the stops to avoid this situation, calling on past Admirals and other experienced players to register for the remainder of the year. This boosted our squad size from 15 at the end of our game 2 weeks ago to 22 at the start of our last match. Sadly we suffered 3 more season-ending injuries and 4 additional players were only available for that match, meaning we have a potential maximum of 15 players to compete in our last 2 games.
We can only sincerely apologise to both the Cornish Sharks and South Wales Warriors for the fact that they will now play a shortened season. This is an upsetting set of circumstances for all involved and after having a game forfeited on us last year we can understand how you may be feeling at this time. As BAFL members we have responsibilities we take very seriously – on this occasion we have failed to meet them.
In the club’s 24-year history this is only the second time that a season has ended prematurely. It is a bitter blow personally that it has occurred whilst I am General Manager of the club, but at this time we can only offer our assurance that we are already taking steps to ensure that there is not a third time.
